Home Affairs Department approves remote work visa proposal

The City of Cape Town is pleased with the Department of Home Affairs' approval of a new visa for remote workers. This change in the law creates a "nomad visa" for people who work remotely.

Cape Town has been pushing for this change to attract more visitors. The new rules were officially published on Tuesday, making them law after fixing earlier issues with the public feedback process.

This proposal responds to complaints from major foreign-owned companies facing difficulties in bringing technicians and executives into South Africa due to the country's complicated permit system. The process, hindered by a shortage of staff, has caused some applicants to wait over a year for a work permit.

This new visa is for remote workers who are employed by companies outside of South Africa and earn at least R1 million per year.
