A motorist was arrested last week after he had outstanding warrants totalling more than R100 000. Traffic officers were in the Heideveld area, last Thursday, where they conducted tracing operations for the top 100 offenders with outstanding warrants.
According to a statement from the City of Cape Town, officers
spotted a vehicle on their list, but the driver refused to stop, and sped off.
‘’At some point, he abandoned the vehicle and continued on
foot, but officers caught up with him. The
suspect was positively identified as being on the list, with 30 outstanding
warrants totalling R101 700. He was detained at Wynberg SAPS, and appeared in
the municipal court the following day,’’ said JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety
& Security.
Additionally, the City’s enforcement agencies arrested 399
suspects and issued 71 861 fines during weekly patrols. Of these, traffic
officers issued 64 765 fines, impounded 151 public transport vehicles and
executed 1 909 warrants of arrest. Officers also arrested 69 motorists - 51 for
driving under the influence of alcohol, seven for reckless and negligent
driving and 11 others for various transgressions, including possession of a
stolen vehicle, false documentation and assault of an officer.
‘’In the last week, we saw an increase in arrests compared
to the previous week, but also another warrant dodger ending up behind bars.
These successes are incredibly encouraging, considering the often difficult
circumstances that our staff have to contend with. I am particularly happy with
the regular gains being made against scofflaws. We have far too many road users
on our streets who think they are untouchable – that is until the long arm of
the law catches up with them,' said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for
Safety and Security.
At the same time, the Public Emergency Communication Centre
(PECC) recorded 1 849 incidents over the past weekend. Calls included
assistance with broken down vehicles, medical related emergencies and by-law
transgressions. The high number of physical assault cases remain a concern –
agents dealt with 91 calls for assistance, of which 46 were firearm related
assault cases.
