In preparation for the approaching winter storms, the City of Cape Town's Energy Directorate has launched a proactive initiative to minimize the risk of electricity outages caused by encroaching trees and vegetation on power lines and infrastructure. This initiative is part of the City's Winter Readiness programme, aimed at safeguarding electricity supply during inclement weather.
Councillor Beverley van Reenen, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, emphasized the importance of this work. "Our trimming work near our electricity infrastructure is crucial for the safety and reliability of our supply infrastructure," said van Reenen. "Damaged infrastructure typically takes some time to repair and replace, and in many instances, the nature of the repair work is tricky and dangerous."
"We ask residents to have a look at trees and vegetation on their own property that could be a risk to power supply, but to leave tree trimming near all electricity infrastructure to professionals," added van Reenen. Residents are encouraged to contact the City if they have concerns about trees or vegetation affecting power supply on their property.
