DA forms coalition with ANC, IFP

The leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen, is adamant that his party will not be in the shadows of the other political parties that form part of the government of national unity.

Steenhuisen announced on Friday that an agreement had been reached for the formation of a unity government with the African National Congress (ANC) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

Addressing the media, Steenhuisen described it as a historic day for South Africa.  Steenhuisen said the DA agreed to sign the deal, as it believes it would be to the benefit of all South Africans.

‘’Following the signing of this document by the leaders of the respective parties involved – including the DA, the IFP and the ANC – the DA will now enter national government, as well as provincial government in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The statement that emerges from the past two weeks of intense but mature negotiations, charts a new course for our nation.’’

‘’At the heart of this GNU statement, is a shared respect for, and defence of, our Constitution and the rule of law, including the Bill of Rights – in its entirety. It is a document that is realistic about the need for mechanisms to deal with the disagreements that will inevitably arise in a multiparty government, adopting the threshold of “sufficient consensus” that served our country well during the CODESA negotiations,’’ added Steenhuisen.

He says that the DA will assume various leadership roles in the national Cabinet, the National Assembly, the National Council of Provinces, and on parliamentary portfolio committees

‘’This arrangement ensures that the voices of DA voters will now be heard in all the rooms where decisions are made about the future of our country. From today, the DA will co-govern the Republic of South Africa, in a spirit of unity and collaboration. The DA takes this historic step forward out of our deep and abiding love for the people of this country,’’ said Steenhuisen.

ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula said that the Government of National Unity is to prioritise the country

‘’It does not mean political parties cease to freely say whatever they want to say should we get into the GNU and there are issues we need to hold each other accountable for. Our engagements and agreements with political parties are not based on positions because that would become transactional. We are focused on foundational principles of what we want to achieve within the GNU. The composition of the GNU will be known when the President makes an announcement. Ours is to bring about stability and assurance to all South Africans that the country is in safe hands and we are moving forward.’’
