One hundred and thirteen people have been affected by inclement weather experienced on Thursday night.
According to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk
Management Centre, 25 households in Tafelsig, Mitchell’s Plain were impacted by
strong wind gusts overnight – 20 formal dwellings and five backyard structures.
In Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, an assessment found that 80
informal structures had been impacted by the rainfall overnight. In Kalk Bay, a
house was damaged by a mud slide – the Roads Department is assisting with sand
bags, and clearing debris. Flooding has also been reported in informal
structures in Dunoon, Strand, Khayelitsha, Belgravia, Overcome Heights and
Gugulethu. The City’s Charlotte Powell said assessments in Khayelitsha are
still being finalised. Flooding of formal structures were also reported in Sea
Point, Seawinds and Masiphumelele.
Residents claimed that a tornado struck these areas, but
the DRMC could not confirm this allegations.
‘’We have reached out to the City’s Informal Settlements
Management Department and the National Human Settlements Department for
assistance with the structural damage caused. The City’s humanitarian relief
partners have been activated to provide soft relief to the different areas,’’
said Charlotte Powell, City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre
spokesperson.
