A shy of 300 schools in the Western Cape have been damaged or caused some sort of disruption, as the province experiences cold and wet weather.
Providing an update on Friday afternoon, the Western Cape’s
Education Department (WCED) said of these, 121 schools has been regarded as ‘urgent’.
‘’30 schools have requested closure in the past 24 hours as
a result of flooding or structural damages. The WCED’s infrastructure team is
working hard to address each query as fast as possible. The continued rain and
winds have not assisted matters,’’ said Bronagh Hammond, WCED spokesperson.
She said that the provincial department is currently
assessing the damages caused as a result of the latest storm, but despite this
schools in all education districts will open on Monday.
‘’Unless permission has been granted by the Head of
Department to temporarily close the school. In these cases the school will
communicate directly with the parents concerned,’’ said Hammond.
