Western Cape Disaster Officials Prioritise Restoring Water and Electricity in Flood-Hit Riverlands

Western Cape Disaster Management MEC Anton Bredell said officials would make restoring water and electricity the top priority in flood-affected Riverlands near Malmesbury today.

This follows a visit by the Water and Sanitation Minister to assess the damage after three dams collapsed, leaving many residents reliant on charitable aid for water.

Over 50 households were destroyed in the disaster. Bredell explained the initial focus was on safeguarding lives, including monitoring a fourth at-risk dam. The second priority is addressing the needs of affected residents, who have been sheltered in community halls with assistance from organisations.

Now the immediate focus is on restoring basic services like water and electricity as the disaster response continues in Riverlands.
