COSATU and its affiliated trade unions marched from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) to Parliament on Monday. The workers marched for the creation of more jobs, a decrease in electricity prices and safe working conditions. The march officially started at 10:30 with crowds marching in masses.
The unions marched due
to the crippling economic crisis South Africa faces such as poverty,
unemployment and inequality.
COSATU has stated it's primary grievance which is the high unemployment rate with 11.3 million people
being unemployed currently. According to Statistics South Africa, the country’s
unemployment rate rose to 33.5% in the second quarter of 2024.
COSATU says it is
unacceptable for employers to continue retrenching the few workers with jobs.
With companies going under liquidation and employees being retrenched South
Africa faces a dire future and job security cannot be promised.
The memorandum was handed over to Parliament and is focused on a long list that included questions on crime, job losses, gender based violence, generative value to the workplace and the implementation of labour laws.
The members expect an
answer within 14 days.
