The basic education minister Siviwe Gwarube has congratulated the class of 2024 on their achievement of passing their matric examination. The class of 2024 have a 87.3% pass rate.
The results were announced today at 10 O clock.This is a significant improvement compared to the class of 2023’s 81.3% pass rate.
The minister thanked the educators for their diligence and hard work. Gwarube stated that education is not just government’s priority, but everyone plays a role in it.
Although, unemployment
remains one of South Africa’s biggest socio economic issues the minister
believes that quality education can ensure learners to further their studies
and enter the job market with their qualifications.
Due to the amount of
learners who unable to read with understanding when they reach Grade 4, it
becomes difficult for educators to teach them and for the learners to understand
as they lack foundation phase skills. This limits their ability to comprehend
in higher grades and also affects their future in the long-run.
Gwarube highlighted
that the class of 2024 started their high school journey at the height of the
2020 Covid-19 pandemic and managed to make it through.
The number of full time candidates who wrote their matric exams increased from 691 000 to over 700 000.Learners who failed are allowed to ask for a remark on their NSC examinations.
The minister is pleased
with the 2024 matric results, but believes there is room for improvement
although half of the class of 2024 received a Bachelor’s pass. KwaZulu Natal is
the leading province with the highest number Bachelor passes.
The minister concluded and congratulated the
class of 2024 on their achievement and wished them well for the future ahead.
