On Tuesday the Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy released the Easter safety report.
On the 20th March minister Creecy launched the Easter road safety campaign with civil society and a number of other organisations. According to Creecy this year had the lowest fatalities compared to previous years. Crashes were reduced from 209 in 2024 to 141 in 2025 which is a 32.5% decrease compared to 2024. According to Creecy fatalities reduced from 307 to 167 which means it decreased by 45%.
During the Easter period many people are prone to travelling which increases the chances of crashes. The Easter road safety campaign started on the 20 March and many routes had agreed that visible patrols on those routes will form the cornerstone of the safety of pedestrians. Creecy said law enforcements, police officials etc made the operation run smoothly. The Easter campaign will end on the 4th May to ensure safety even on the long weekends.
The theme for this years campaign was “It starts with me” with the help of law enforcement, national and provincial government authorities including partnerships.
177 584 were stopped and checked
44 505 traffic fines were issued to drivers
2 018 vehicles were discontinued
1 536 vehicles were impounded
941 drivers were arrested for drunk driving
89 drivers were arrested for speeding over the limit
12 pedestrians were arrested for jaywalking
8 drunk drivers were arrested for attempting to bribe
officers
Creecy says that because they started implementing the road safety plan that is why the fatalties decreased. From the beginning of the year until March there has been a 16% decrease in fatalities. 8 provinces excluding Mpumalanga saw a decrease in road accidents. The minister of transport says fatalities involving pedestrians are concerning as 46% of accidents are caused by pedestrians. The minister’s goal is to reduce crashes by 50% before 2029.
The minister ended off by thanking law enforcement, national and provincial government authorities including partnerships and responsible motorists to ensure that this year’s Easter period was safer than last year.
