Shooting incidents occurred hours apart in Portland, M/Plain

Mitchell’s Plain police are investigating murder and attempted murder cases that occurred hours apart in Portland on Wednesday.

A 39-year-old man was shot and killed in Wespoort Drive on Wednesday evening. According to reports, the incident is believed to be a drive-by shooting.

‘’The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Wednesday evening, 02 July 2025, at about 20:08, on the corner of Wespoort and Hazeldene Avenue, Portlands, Mitchell's Plain, where a 39 year old male was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation. Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Western Cape police spokesperson.

The unknown suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. Police are investigating a murder case.

Hours prior, a man escaped unharmed following a shooting incident in Nile Way.

Police believe the motive behind the attack could be gang related.

‘’ Mitchells Plain police registered an attempted murder following a shooting incident on Wednesday, 2025-07-02 at about 13:05 at a premises in Nile Street, Portlands, Mitchell's Plain. According to reports the Complainant  was  on his way home from the shop, when he saw a white Toyota Quantum driving in Nile Street into Zambizi Street. As he opened the gate three unidentified males got out of the Quantum and started firing several shots at him. He managed to ran into the house unharmed. The motive is believed to be gang related,’’ said Captain F.C Van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Last Sunday, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed in Molopo close in Portland. A teenage boy survived the attack. On Friday, a 24-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Michigan Way. A suspect has since appeared in court regarding this matter.
