Western Cape police arrested two teenagers following an attack on three Members of Parliament (MP) in Philippi, on Tuesday afternoon. Parliament's portfolio committee chairperson on police, Ian Cameron, as well as DA MP's Nicholas Gotsell, and Lisa Schickerling, were assaulted while returning from an oversight visit to the police training college in Philippi.
‘’ The 16 year old who was arrested in Browns Farm
[in the early hours of Wednesday morning] has since been charged. The first
suspect, an 18-year-old male was apprehended on Tuesday evening as he sought
medical assistance at a facility in Lentegeur. It is believed he was shot
during the attack on the three victims when one of the vehicle occupants
allegedly fired a shot in response to the attack. He is currently under police
guard in hospital,’’ said Brigadier Novela Potelwa, Western cape police
spokesperson.
Potelwa says a third suspect is being sought.
‘’Initial reports of the crime incident indicate the attack
was perpetrated by three male suspects. The investigation continues with
another arrest expected in due course.’’
The suspects face attempted murder and attempted hijacking
charges.
Reacting to the ordeal, Cameron said he sustained some
injuries, ‘’including a few stitches and dental damage, but nothing
life-threatening.’’
‘’This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it
underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will
not deter us. We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure
accountability and safety. We also appreciate the support of colleagues and
community members who have stood with us. Tonight I was able to sit down with
my family for dinner, and for that we are eternally grateful. Dankie Jesus!!!

National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, has
condemned the attack.
“This criminal act, which targeted Members of Parliament,
is a direct attack on the safety of citizens and will not be tolerated. We are
sending a stern warning to all those involved in serious and violent crimes;
the SAPS has deployed all available resources to ensure that criminals are
hunted down, apprehended, and put behind bars to face the full might of the
law.”
‘’The National Commissioner further emphasized that the
creation of safer communities and the strengthening of business confidence
remain the core priorities of the SAPS. He urged community members to stand
together with the police by providing reliable information that can lead to the
swift arrest of the suspects still at large,’’ said Major General Nonkululeko
Phokane, Head: Corporate Communication & Liaison at South African Police
Service
Parliament echoed Masemola’s sentiments.
‘’The Presiding Officers express deep concern, noting that
such shocking acts of criminality not only endanger the lives of elected
representatives and members of the public but also undermine Parliament’s
constitutional duty to hold organs of state accountable through oversight. Parliament
conveys heartfelt wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the affected
Members,’’ said Moloto Mothapo, Parliament spokesperson.
