School safety in the spotlight as learners turns violent

School safety is once again in the spotlight following reports of violence amongst learners in recent days.

Western Cape police confirmed that an 18-year-old learner from AZ Berman High School in Mitchell’s Plain will soon appear in court, following a stabbing incident, on Wednesday, injuring four learners. It is understood an argument ensued between the suspect and the victims.

In Eersteriver, learners at Tuscany Glen High School involved in a fight have been suspended for seven days. It is reported that a learner was injured with a sharp object, after its understood learners took one of their fellow’s cap without permission on his way home.

Last week, Bush Radio News reported of two Mitchell’s Plain schools involved in an altercation, which resulted in stone throwing during interval.

The Western Cape’s Standing Committee of Education this week also visited Langa High School following complaints of safety and substance abuse. The committee also visited Mitchell’s Plain High School, following concerns about inadequate infrastructure, squatters occupying school land, and broader safety challenges facing learners and educators.

This comes months after the Basic Education Department and the police Ministry signed and launch of the Safe Schools Protocol, to curb violence and sexual misconduct in and around schools
