Two City Law Enforcement officers nabbed for extorting spaza shops

The City of Cape Town says two Law Enforcement officers stationed at the Metal Theft Unit have been arrested on charges of extortion.

According to the Hawks, the duo aged 36 and 41, were arrested on Tuesday morning after incidents that took place from January 2025 where they were arrested on a warrant of arrest. It is believed that the officers  were targeting foreign nationals spaza shops requesting their asylum documentation.

‘’With or without the documents the officers will still demand money. On different occasions the victims paid an amount of R5 000 and R6 000. Further, the investigation revealed that during an arrest of one of the victims the suspects managed to steal cigarettes out of the victims vehicle to the value of over R600 000 while the victim was being processed at Phillipi East police station. Following the investigation, the team applied for the warrants of arrest which was subsequently granted by the court,’’ said Warrant Officer, Zinzi Hani, Hawks Western Cape spokesperson.

‘’It is reported that the two suspects were previously arrested in May 2025 on similar charges and they were subsequently released on bail,’’ added Hani.
