Wednesday marks World Cancer Day, and South Africans are called upon to stand ‘United by Unique’, which is the global theme highlighting the importance of seeing the person behind the diagnosis and responding to their individual needs, circumstances and lived experiences.
According to Cancer South Africa (CANSA), the country faces
a rapidly growing cancer burden. The
organisation says with a population of approximately 60 million people, cancer
incidence in South Africa is projected to double by 2030, reaching an estimated
220 000 new cases.
“This increase is driven by population growth, ageing and
rising age-specific cancer rates. To improve cancer outcomes, healthcare must
be people-centred – sensitive to patients’ perceptions, lived realities and
information needs. This approach improves wellbeing, strengthens trust,
promotes health equity and leads to better-quality care,’’ said Lorraine
Govender, CANSA National Manager: Health Programmes.
