Belhar Community Outraged: Social Housing Project Sparks Battle Over School Land

A heated battle is brewing in Belhar, as residents take the City to task over a plot of land initially earmarked for a much-needed school. The community, plagued by poverty, crime, and overcrowding, is determined to hold officials accountable and ensure promises are delivered.

The controversy surrounds a piece of land promised for a school, now allegedly being repurposed for social housing. Residents claim due process was not followed and are taking legal action to ensure their voices are heard.

“Senior Counsel is being briefed, and an urgent application will be brought before the High Court soon," Nina Johnson, a community member.

Johnson says the community's concerns are multifaceted. Overcrowding and crime are already pressing issues; furthermore, kids currently have to walk far and cross a dangerous main road just to get to the school.

It is also a health crisis.

“The vibrations are crazy. We actually have a child living right next to the site who just had brain surgery and the noise is a massive risk to their recovery." Says Johnson

Elderly residents are also struggling with this

The community is calling on the City of Cape Town and government to prioritize their needs and keep the original promise, which is a school for their children. As the battle heads to court, residents remain resolute.
