Why Reading to Children Matters More Than Ever

South Africa’s literacy crisis has once again placed children’s reading abilities in the spotlight. Recent findings continue to show that many learners in the foundation phase are struggling to read for meaning, raising concerns about their ability to succeed in later grades.

While schools play a critical role in improving literacy, learning does not begin and end in the classroom. Parents and caregivers also have an important part to play. Reading to children from an early age helps develop vocabulary, language skills and comprehension, while creating positive learning habits that can last a lifetime.

Even spending just a few minutes reading together each day can make a meaningful difference. It not only supports a child’s academic development but also encourages curiosity, strengthens family bonds and nurtures a lifelong love of reading.

As South Africa works to address its reading crisis, creating a culture of reading at home could be one of the most powerful steps towards improving children’s futures.
