The fire broke out at the Old Education building on Monday evening. No injuries were reported, but management says the growing violence has become a serious safety concern.

The shutdown comes amid student protests over proposed 2027 financial clearance rules. Students are concerned that those with outstanding fees may have to pay a percentage of their debt upfront before registering.

Some students could also be required to pay around R7,000 upfront for registration and residence fees.

Student activists say the proposals could financially exclude poorer students, while CPUT says violence, arson and attacks on infrastructure have left management with no choice but to act.

All academic activities are suspended, staff will work remotely, and university residences must be vacated by 4pm on Wednesday, August 19.
