New submarine arrives today
The first of South Africa's three new German-built submarines is expected in Simon’s Town from Europe today. The S101 will be the first operational South African submarine in South African waters since the decommissioning of the last Spear in November 2003. While the submarine left Kiel on the 17th of February in the company of the SAS Drakensberg, it continued alone from Spain, when the ship was diverted to take on board the Koeberg replacement rotor. The frigate, the SAS Amatola, met the S101 south of the equator at the end of last month.
