Policeman shot dead after killing spree
A senior West Rand police officer has been shot dead after his killing spree early yesterday evening that left eight people dead – including three women and a baby boy. He also wounded another woman before he shot dead four colleagues. Police spokesperson Mary Martins-Engelbrecht says Chippa Mateane, who was in his late 30s, opened fire on four women and a one-year-old baby at a smallholding in the Tarlton area about six-thirty. Three of the women as well as the baby died. A 21-year-old woman is in a critical condition. After the attack Mateane drove to Kagiso police station in a police car and mowed down four colleagues. The policemen were senior superintendent MM Zondo, captain TD Masipa, captain JM Sokhela, and a captain Monama, who was in his middle 40s. Mateane was shot dead by police at about four this morning after a massive manhunt.
