Sentences for sex offenders deemed too lenient
Marketing insights company Research Surveys says 94 percent of adults surveyed say sentences for sex offenders are far too lenient. Director Refiloe Mataboge says attitudes hardened noticeably once questions focused on offences against children. The vast majority of people felt that offenders who had molested or raped a child should be registered and monitored after serving their sentences. Mataboge says the results of the telephone survey showed that sentences for sex offences were viewed as not yet appropriate. He says it is clear that people generally understand that sex crimes are not about sex but about power.
