Plans for building new prisons on schedule
The building of four correctional centers to ease overcrowding in the country’s prisons is going ahead as planned. Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour has denied allegations that funds initially earmarked for building the prisons had been deviated to other projects. He said the building programme was well on course and that money budgeted for this purposes was still available. BuaNews reports the government approved the department’s plan to build the new prisons in Leeukop, Klerksdorp, Nigel and Kimberly in 2002.
