Search for Alexandros T crew continues
The search for the 26 missing crew of the Greek cargo ship Alexandros T about 600 kilometres off the coast of Port Elizabeth is continuing despite no further success so far. A Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre spokesperson has confirmed that search and rescue operations are continuing, with the tug Smit Amandla still in the area. However, visibility is very poor. Gale force winds of about 50 knots and a sea swell of between five and seven metres are also hampering the search. Only empty life jackets and a lifebuoy ring have been found among debris floating on the sea in the area where the ship sank earlier this week. Seven of the crew of 33 were rescued between Wednesday and Thursday after the Alexandros T had gone down in heavy seas.
