Shocking statistics regarding the youth and crime
More than 40 percent of South African young people between the ages of 12 and 22 have been victims of crime. A study by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention found that one in seven young people had been the victim of an assault, and one in ten of robbery. The study revealed that just over half of children at school were subjected to corporal punishment. More than one in five lived in homes where domestic violence was common. More than two out of five youngsters had a family member who was currently, or had been, in jail. The researchers conclude that urgent intervention is necessary.
