Teachers' salary increases to be reviewed
The Department of Education has announced that it may review some aspects of the recent agreements intended to improve teacher’s salaries. This follows concerns raised by teacher unions. Minister Naledi Pandor says her department will look into cases where the new salary structure creates a situation where teachers could earn more than principals. Pandor gave the assurance that teachers would get improved remuneration as promised, and that teacher unions had endorsed the new salary structure. A sum of more than four billion rands had been set aside to improve salaries in education. BuaNews reports that the Department will present its budget in Parliament next week.
