Stellenbosch police discovered the body of a male nearby Faure railway station on Friday.
The victim was discovered lying face down, and he sustained a bullet wound to the head, as well as burn wounds to the body.
A post mortem will be conducted to find out the cause of his death.
Captain Renee Matthee said the victim was later identified as 48 year old Johannesburg physiologist, Klaas Jonkeid.
The victim was reported missing after he failed to return to a farewell dinner at Spier wine estate, where he attended a conference earlier the day.
A case of murder is being investigated and the suspects are still at large.
