Jacobus Eksteen who is accused of murdering 20-year-old Stellenbosch student Erin van Rensburg is to also face charges of rape, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances, prosecutors told the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Prosecutors also gave notice that they would try to keep Eksteen behind bars until his trial.
Eksteen made his third appearance in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court yesterday.
The state will not only oppose bail, but the onus will now be on Eksteen and his legal team to prove that there are exceptional reasons why he should be granted bail.
In the absence of these reasons, he will remain in custody until his case eventually reaches the higher courts for trial.
