Police special task force members freed five hostages after an armed robbery took place at a store in Vangate Mall, Athlone last night.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said that earlier that afternoon at least two unknown men entered the shop during closing time, posing as customers.
According to police the suspects threatened staff members at gunpoint demanding cash from one of the cashiers. At gunpoint they ordered five staff members into the manager’s office where they were locked up.
“Centre security were informed of the incident and they then informed the police. Various police units cordoned off the scene and negotiated with staff members. Police task force members strategically entered the store and freed all five members who were unharmed,” said van Wyk
“Police will investigate the circumstances of the incident and video surveillance footage will be viewed, and to determine how the suspects fled the scene,” added van Wyk
An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and a case of armed robbery has been opened.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is requested to contact the Athlone police station at (021) 697 9200 or police crime stop number at 08600 10111.
