SABC board Chairperson, Khanyi Mkhonza has resigned following a board meeting that was held yesterday.

In a statement that the broadcaster released, Mkhonza has decided to step down in the interest of the SABC. According to SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago she will however continue to be a member of the Board.

Kganyago says board member Ashwin Trikamjee has in the meantime been appointed as acting chairman.

The SABC has come under fire recently for not meeting its payment obligations to the country’s independent television sector.

Members of production companies, service suppliers, actors, industry organisations and unions participated in a protest march in Auckland Park as well as in Cape Town yesterday, against the public broadcaster’s financial and management crisis.
