President Jacob Zuma has sent a message of condolence to the people of Japan after a massive earthquake struck off the country’s north east coast this morning.

The magnitude eight-point-nine quake is the seventh largest ever in recorded history, and prompted 53 countries in East Asia and the Americas to issue tsunami alerts.

Meanwhile, another earthquake on the American island state of Hawaii is probably unrelated to the much larger quake seen off the coast of north eastern Japan.

This is according to Craig Smith, head of the Geological Society of South Africa. Smith says about 40 or 50 mild to serious earthquakes happen around the world on a daily basis.

He says Hawaii itself is prone to earthquakes.
