Home Affairs has stressed that the tariff increases for identity documents, which kick in today, only apply to those who apply for a second copy of an ID when it has been lost or mislaid.
The idea is to encourage South Africans to value their documents provided to citizens.
Those who apply for an ID for the first time will get it free of charge.
In cases of humanitarian crises caused by fire, floods or other natural disasters, Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will waive the costs of replacing IDs.
Despite the department’s assurances, the Independent Democrats’ Joe Mcgluwa has described the tariff increases as obscene.
He says it is outrageous that the cost of reissuing IDs has soared by 700% from 20- to R140.
Because of new security features, the cost of passports goes up by almost 100% to R400.
Mcgluwa agrees with an immigration law firm which has described Home Affairs as incompetent.
