Residents of the Thembelilhe informal settlement in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, have vowed to continue protesting until their demands for basic services are met.
Police reinforcements were seen moving in to the area after residents fired live ammunition in retaliation earlier today.
Protesters barricaded roads with burning tyres, and have severely damaged several cars with rocks.
At least 18 people have been arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property. They will appear in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court later today.
