National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has called for calm in Pongola.  This is after violence broke out following the brutal murder of a 4-year-old boy by a pastor.  His mutilated body was found by a community member in a plastic bag behind a church.

A 51-year-old pastor has been arrested for the murder.

Phiyega said the community needs to allow the police to do their investigations.

Police Spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said the Commissioner has also mandated the provincial commissioner to continue engaging religious leaders as well as the community leaders in Pongola, to ensure that clam is restored.

“Since last night there have not been any incidents reported but we have deployed additional police officers in the area to ensure that the calm and law and order is maintained” Makgale added.
