Case against suspects linked to kidnapping of Abirah Dekhta, postponed

Seven men appeared at the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Thursday in relation to the kidnapping of 8-year-old Abirah Dekhta.

Dekhta was reunited with her family on Monday night, after being snatched in Gatesville about 2 weeks ago. Police found her in Town Two, Khayelitsha, after receiving a tip off that she was kept in a house in the area.

‘’The State alleges that on 4 November 2022, around 07:20am, the victim was in a learner transport waiting to pick up another learner. Two vehicles stopped around the learner transport and five men alighted the vehicles. They snatched the girl and drove off with her,’’ said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila.

‘’On 14 November 2022, police received a tip off that she was kept in a house in Town Two, Khayelitsha. Police observed three men who were patrolling outside the house. There were four other men inside the house when police made the arrest. There were two women also arrested but they were not brought to court as they cannot be linked to the case,’’ he added.

The case has been postponed to 7 December 2022, for a bail application. Ntabazalila said the State will oppose bail.
