Names released of five people killed during SANTACO taxi strike

A British doctor was shot and killed after taking the wrong turn into Nyanga, travelling from Cape Town International Airport while on holiday in the city. Kar Hao Teoh was with his wife Sara and two-year-old son Hugo when he was fatally shot on 3 August.

Spokesperson for Police Minister, Bheki Cele, Lirandzu Themba said: “The 40-year-old doctor was driving with two other people in the vehicle. From the airport, he apparently took a wrong turn-off last Thursday evening and headed towards Nyanga. In Ntlangano Crescent, a number of suspects approached his vehicle, shot and killed him.”

No arrests have been made.

The surgeon was one of five people who were killed in the wake of the minibus taxi strike in the Western Cape.

Meanwhile, a reward of R250 000 is still up for grabs for anyone with information and the successful conviction, following the murder of 32-year-old LEAP Officer Zanikhaya Kwinana. Kwinana was on duty at the time of the incident which occurred on Friday, 4 August, was attached to the Gugulethu unit.

According to mayco member for safety & security, JP Smith, Kwinana was a passenger in a marked Law Enforcement vehicle driving in Nyanga, just after 8pm, when they came under heavy fire.

‘’When his colleagues realised he had been hit, they sped off to Heideveld Day Hospital, but the officer was declared deceased on arrival - he had sustained gunshot wounds to the head,’’ said Smith.

It is unclear if the incident is directly linked to the minibus taxi strike.

Western Cape SAPS are probing the matter, and asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10 111.

‘’I urge anyone with information to share it with all law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) so that the perpetrators can be apprehended and convicted. We need these heartless killers off our streets and behind bars,’’ said Reagen Allen, Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety MEC.

‘’An attack on any law enforcement officer is an attack on the State. I want to assure Officer Kwinana’s family, friends and colleagues that we will be ruthless in our pursuit of his killers and will leave no stone unturned until we find them,’’ he added.

Furthermore, Allen, released the names of the five people who lost their lives in violence stemming from the strike.

‘’This includes Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officer Zanikhaya Kwinana, British citizen, Dr Karhao Teoh, Mr Arthur Mlandeli, Mr Makhosandile, Joseph Mkhela and one other person whose name has not been released. There must be consequences,’’ said Reagen Allen, Western Cape’s Police Oversight & Community Safety MEC.
