The Western Cape’s Mobility MEC, Ricardo Mackenzie, has urged road users to be safe on provincial roads as we head into the Easter long weekend.
‘’As the school holiday begin, and families begin to
travel, we all need to take responsibility for road safety. Let’s make this
Easter holiday a time of joy and safety on WC roads. We are ready for this busy
period, and we will do our best to keep residents are visitors safe on the
roads.
‘’Heightened provincial law enforcement will include high
visibility patrols, targeting moving violations, inter-provincial corridor
operations, K78 roadblocks focused on exodus traffic and fatigue management
interventions,’’ added Mackenzie.
The MEC will on Saturday, officially launch the 2024
provincial Easter Road Safety campaign. The launch is set to include a
walkabout and inspection of the free ten-point vehicle checks offered by the
WCG to help motorists prepare for long-distance travel during the Easter
holiday period. The programme will also include key road safety partners
(Discovery Safe Journey to School, SANRAL Road Incident Management, and an
eyecare awareness campaign).
Twenty-six people lost their lives on Western Cape roads in 2023, compared to 36 in 2022.
Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, on Wednesday, launched
the 2024 Easter Road Safety Campaign in Mpumalanga under the theme "Fika
uphila" (Arrive Alive), which focuses on encouraging road users to
exercise consciousness regarding their safety, ensuring they reach their
destinations safely.
