Final results of election expected Saturday evening
The IEC has announced that the final results of the municipal elections will be announced at a function in Pretoria Saturday evening. President Thabo Mbeki is expected to attend the function. A spokesperson for the IEC says with all 237 municipal councils declared, the ANC has captured 200 councils, the IFP 25 and the DA seven. Voter turnout stands at 48 percent which is similar to that in 2000. The ANC has captured 66 percent of the vote, which is up on the 60 percent in 2000. The DA polled 16 percent, down from the 22 percent of 2000. Meanwhile, the IEC is considering some 50 complaints lodged by parties after the municipal polls. Political parties had until yesterday afternoon to register complaints with the IEC.
