Hlophe asked to explain his relationship with Oasis

Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe has been asked by the Judicial Services Council to explain his relationship with the Oasis Group. His application for long leave from next Monday has also been granted. Chief Justice Pius Langa will reportedly be sending a letter to Justice Hlophe and Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai to stop scolding each other in public.
Allegations came to light last week that Hlophe had received up to 10-thousand rand per month from Oasis for legal advice and for being a trustee of a retirement fund. Judges need permission from the minister of justice if they want to receive additional income. Judge Hlophe claims that the late Dullah Omar, who was minister of justice at the time, gave him permission for the payments by Oasis.
