The fate of Cape Town city manager Wallace Mgoqi could finally be decided on Monday at a special meeting of the city council. The meeting has been convened after Mgoqi rejected an offer of a new three-month contract. Executive mayor Helen Zille says the only reason why a special meeting has been called is because Mgoqi rejected the same offer that was put to every other political appointee. She says the contracts of other political appointees, that were to have expired on March 1, were extended by three months by the previous administration. Zille told the Cape Times that Mgoqi wanted more than the three months offered.
Zille accuses Mgoqi, who was party to the extension of his contract by former executive mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo two days before the March election, of gravy-training of the worst kind. She says it will be irresponsible of her to allow Mgoqi to stay on as city manager, with a dubious contract.
