Former deputy president Jacob Zuma will learn at the weekend where he stands in the ANC following being found not guilty of rape. ANC spokesperson Steyn Speed says the party is to hold a special meeting in Johannesburg on Sunday to decide Zuma’s political future. Zuma is officially still the deputy president of the ANC, but he withdrew from official duties when he was charged with rape in December last year. President Thabo Mbeki also earlier relieved Zuma of his duties as deputy president of the country when he was charged with corruption – a charge he must still face in July.
Meanwhile, the verdict in the Zuma rape trial has not gone unnoticed on the international scene. The British newspaper Daily Telegraph says the trial showed what it termed the mob-like, macho face of the ANC. The paper says in a main article that someone like Cyril Ramaphosa, a businessman and ANC heavyweight, could change the situation. The Telegraph says the accused in the Zuma case should not be the one to remain behind at the end of Mbeki’s term of office.
