Minister in the Presidency for National Planning Commission Trevor Manuel is to take over responsibility for Statistics South Africa.

Statistician-general Pali Lehohla was quoted as saying the organisation will also have its role expanded to supply information needed for government's strategic planning.

While Statistics South Africa, and Treasury and the South African Revenue Service, used to report to the finance ministry, will all now report to Manuel.
