The man appeared in court for allegedly raped the little girl after her mother left the child in his care on Saturday.
The man is behind bars and will make his next court appearance on March 25 and the state is expected to oppose any bail application.
Earlier we reported that the girl sustained severe internal injuries, but police have confirmed that she underwent surgery at the weekend.
