Two suspects charged with theft with false pretence were arrested in Maitland yesterday.
Police spokesperson Inspector Vukubi says one of the suspects approached a complainant in Colin Street, Maitland pretending to be a fortune teller.
“As the complainant was listening to what he was saying a second male passed them and he was also stopped. This is when the first male sent this male person to buy a box of matches so that he could perform the miracles,” said Vukubi.
Inspector Vukubi says as the second suspect came back he said he picked up a R200, as a sign of luck.
The first suspect then sent the complainant to also go and buy candles so that she could get lucky.
She was told to leave her belongs to them.
When she came back with the candle they were both missing.
Inspector Vukubi says, fortunately for the victim, a witness saw them getting into a taxi down Voortrekker road direction Cape Town with her belongings.
A complainant flagged down the patrol vehicle and gave chase.
The suspects were arrested in a taxi still in possession of the complainant’s handbag, wallet, cellphone and a plastic of groceries.
Both suspects aged 48 and 32 from Langa will appear in Cape Town court soon.
