Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha has met with top management of the Western Cape Department of Health about the allegations about illegal organ transplants at Cape hospitals.
Health department spokesperson Hélène Rossouw says the information surfaced over the weekend and it is not new information, although it was construed as new information.
“The allegations resurfaced as a spill-over of the court case in Kwa-Zulu Natal at the end of 2010 following an investigation into illegal organ transplants in a private medical facility in that province.
“This is a legal process under investigation by the Commercial Crimes Unit and the law must run its course. We eagerly await the outcome of that investigation and that the guilty parties will suffer the consequences of their actions,” said Rossouw.
Rossouw added that in this province facility licensing is in accordance with the highest international and ethical standards, and will ensure patient safety.
