The Correctional Services Department says no human rights violations took place during a riot at the Kimberly Prison in September last year.
Department spokesperson Manelisi Wolela says standard operating procedures were followed to quash the riot.
Reports this week claimed security personnel assaulted prisoners and forced them to strip naked in an attempt to humiliate them. The reports also said tear gas had been used.
Wolela denies the claims, calling the reports “irresponsible and sensational”.
