While the focus was on high-profile police arrests in Gauteng this week, five constables from the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Policing unit appeared in court yesterday.
They police officials are facing charges relating to murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.
The Independent Complaints Directorate says this follows an investigation into the death of 45-year-old Zamokwakhwe Goodman Mchunu from Shakaskraal in KwaZulu-Natal.
The suspects, one of whom is a woman, are accused of severely assaulting and eventually killing Mchunu during a search for a firearm.
