Pan SA Language Board chief executive Chris Swepu says government should consider making skill in an African language a requirement for those applying for jobs in the public service.
This follows a comment made by Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande, where he stated that university students in South Africa should be required to learn an African language.
Swepu said introducing African languages as a requirement in universities would "strengthen" students at universities as well as the working class.
The idea has been met with mixed reactions from the Christian Democratic Party. CDP spokesperson Christo Landman says he agrees with Nzimande, but adds that this is on condition that Afrikaans is also regarded by the Minister as an African language.
