Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says criminals have declared war on society and the police. In the light of the recent surge in attacks on police members, Mthethwa has convened a summit against the scourge.
At the summit on the East Rand next Friday, representatives from community policing forums, business, the media and academia will be asked to share their expertise.
Thirty-nine police members have been murdered so far this year.
Meanwhile, a provincial commercial farming organisation has told a government agriculture oversight committee that Free State farmers lose estimated 80-million-Rands annually due to stock theft.
Free State Agriculture chief executive Henk Vermeulen adds that this also causes a loss to the state of an estimated 11-million-Rands in value added tax.
A police delegation indicated that they were not yet in a position to share the latest stock theft statistics with the public.
