The National Union of Metalworkers says a country-wide strike could see more than 300-thousand workers down tools.
Around 900 businesses are expected to be affected by the strike.
Numsa is demanding wage increases of 13-percent from the metal and engineering industries, down from an initial demand of 20-percent.
Employers are offering seven-percent. Marches have been organised in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, East London and Cape Town.
