Unpacking the Integrated Development Plan / Public Participation

The Integrated Development Plan tells the municipality what's it's going to do to develop an area.

The Municipal Systems Act of 2000 describes the IDP as a principal strategic planning instrument which guides and informs all planning and development and all decisions with regards to planning, management, and development of the municipality.

The IDP process is a 5-year plan, which is reviewed on an annual basis. The IDP focuses on basic service delivery, local economic development and most importantly – good governance and public participation.

Public participation enable us to interact with government on an ongoing basis on matters that concern us. Through public participation, government remains in touch with our needs and we can hold government accountable for it.

Our constitution and laws spells out what government has to do to facilitate public participation in important municipal decision-making processes such as the drafting of by-laws and the IDP.
